Abstract (EN)

The aim of the present study was to investigate the genotoxic effects of Monosodium glutamate (MSG), on human peripheral lymphocytes by using sister chromatid exchange (SCE), chromosomal aberration (CA) and micronucleus (MN) tests. Cells were treated with 3000, 4000 ve 5000 µg/ml monosodium glutamate for 24 and 48 hours.MSG did not induce SCEs in human peripheral blood lymphocytes in 24-h and treatment period. But MSG induced SCEs only lowest dose of 48-h (3000 µg/ml) treatment. MSG statistically significant degree induced CA formation at the highest concentration (5000 µg/ml) of 24-h treatment period and at the two highest concentration (4000 and 5000 µg/ml) of 48-h treatment period.MN did not induce in 24-h and 48-h treatment periods and in all concentrations. MSG diminished MI only in the highest two concentrations of 24-h treatment period (4000 and 5000 µg/ml) and diminished MI all concentrations of 48-h treatment period. MSG generally induced PI in all concentrations and in all treatment periods, but did not significant when compared to control for 24-h and 48-h treatment periods. MSG did not decrease NDI in all concentrations and in all treatment periods compared to control.
