Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the periodontal aesthetic perception and quality of life of individuals associated with gingival recession and gingival enlargement in the anterior region. Our study included 184 individuals with periodontal healthy, diagnosed with chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement and Cairo Type 1 gingival recession. In order to evaluate periodontal clinical conditions, plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment level (CAL), and recession depth (RD) were measured. Then the socioeconomic and demographic data of the individuals and their oral hygiene habits were recorded. Periodontal aesthetic perception was evaluated using periodontal aesthetic perception scale (PAPS), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) scale. In the statistical analysis of the data, descriptive statistical methods, Shapiro-Wilk Test, Kruskall-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Chi-square analysis, Spearman's correlation analysis were used. PI, GI, SK values were highest in the gingival enlargement group and lowest in the periodontal health group. The highest PAPS-T, PAPS-E and PAPS-P scores were found in the periodontal healthy group. The PAPS-E score was similar for gingival recession and gingival enlargement. The PAPS-P score was lowest in the gingival enlargement group. No difference was observed in OHIP scores in the gingival recession and gingival enlargement group, except for functional limitation value. The highest score in functional limitation was observed in gingival enlargement. Except for the social disability value, the lowest values of other OHIP-14 subheadings and total OHIP-14 score were found in the periodontal healthy group. There was no difference between the groups in social disability. According to our study, gingival recession and gingival enlargement were similarly affected by individuals' aesthetic perceptions and OHRQoL. Periodontal aesthetic perceptions of individuals with gingival recession are better than individuals with gingival enlargement.
