Cultural capital and cultural elitism in music preference: Cyprus example

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, based on the Cyprus example, the effect of "Cultural Capital" and "Cultural Elitism" concepts have been examined in shaping people's music preferences considering two different societies and the similarities inbetween and the results have been evaluated in the lights of these concepts. In the first part of the three part consisting thesis, with an emphasis on music and music preference, it is referred to music appreciation and music functions in human life, social class, preference, education relations. In the second part of the study, Bourdieu's sociology have been mentioned in order to understand his cultural capital concept and also literature search have been made to explain field, habitus, game, types of capital, cultural capital and cultural elitism concepts. Third part covers the face to face interviews that was conducted through the whole island with 120 Turkish Cypriots and 102 Greek Cypriots and also covers the results of these conducts. Research also describes the pilot study that was conducted prior to the interviews. Interview forms consisting of closed and open-ended questions were given in Turkish to Turkish Cypriots and in English to Greek Cypriots. The results were evaluated and reviewed in relation to cultural capital and cultural elitism concepts and two communitites have shown to have a mutual size in effect.
