The evaluation of Nezihe Meriç's children books in accordance with the main principles of children literature

Today, there is a considerable increase in publications in the field of children's literature. The most important factor to be considered is the suitability of these products for child readers in terms of quality. This gave rise to the question of whether these products are suitable for the basic principles of children's literature. In this respect, it is very important for the products of children's literature, which aim to impart the habit of reading to the child, to present quality examples. In the current study, the compatibility of 10 products of children's literature, which constitute all of the works written by Nezihe Meriç in the field of children's literature, who is known for her narrative style and her tendency to focus on women's issues, with the principles of children's literature was examined. In the first part of the study, the basic qualitative design method was employed. The collected data were analyzed with document analysis. At this stage, both the internal and external structures of the works were examined under eight headings. At the second stage, the qualities of these works were scored by using the "Evaluation Scale for the Works of Children's and Youth Literature", which consists of eight headings and a total of ninety-three items. As a result of the analyses conducted, it was concluded that Meriç's works are insufficient in terms of design and painting features, especially in the context of illustration, that they are aimed at child readers in terms of content features, that the works are written in a plain and understandable language, that the author's expressive power is sufficient and that considerable importance is attached to national and universal values. In light of the findings of the current study, Nezihe Meriç's products of children's literature can be claimed to be generally in compliance with the basic principles of children's literature.
