THE REV EW ON MACHINABILITY OF INCONEL 718 NICEL BASESUPER ALLOY(Ph. D. Thesis)ABDULLAH ALTINGAZ UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYNowember 2005ABSTRACTIn this study, analysis of tool life, cutting forces and surface roughness for themachining of Inconel 718 with carbide and ceramic cutting tools was carried outand the results were shown graphically. Metal cutting process is done withcutting floods by using Silicon nitrite based ceramic, aluminium okside basedwhisker reinforced ceramic, CVD coated cementid carbide and uncoatedtungsten carbide cutting tools in CNC machine Tool. Assuming flank wear as acriter; tool wear, cutting forces and surface roughness were measured. Flankwear, plastic deformation and notch for coated carbides; Flank wear and notchfor uncoated carbides; crater and flank wear for SNGN inserts, Flank wear andnotch wear for seramic RNG inserts were seen. Width of flank wear area wasconsidered as a main case for the tool life.Optimum values of width of flank wear area, surface roughness and maincutting force for Inconel 718 were found to be Vbb = 0.08 mm, Ra = 0.45 µm veFC = 1149 N, respectively, in 2 mm constant depth of cut, 0.20 mm/rev constantfeed rate, V = 45 m/min cutting speed and by using uncoated SECO 883RCMM carbide insert. The optimum values were found to be Vbb= 0.13 mm,Ra = 1.22 µm and FC = 852 N by using 4300 SNGN whisker reinforced cuttingtool at the cutting speed of 150 m/min.Science code : 728Key word : Super Alloys, Inconel 718, Cuttıng forces, Tool Life, FlankWear, Carbide Insert.Paper number : 207Adviser : Prof. Dr. Muammer NALBANT
