An intercultural comparison of poetry of Nilgün Marmara and Anne Sexton in terms of traumas of womanhood and suicide

The aim of this study is to scrutinize the suicideof two women poets in order to rebel against the gender inequality in society and the gender roles imposed on them, by comparing the life stories and poems of two women from different cultures. In this sense, this study aims to reveal the situation of destroying or ignoring the perception of women in the society with the duties assigned to them, regardless of culture, profession, class, race; through the poems of Nilgün Marmara and Anne Sexton at the intercultural level. It is clear that this act of neglect has traumatic effects for all women. Therefore, although the consequences of their traumas were suicidal, it will be useful to see the similarities of both poets in terms of their female experiences with the poems reflecting their depressed periods while living, and to explore the transcultural dimensions of women's secondaryization and disregard experiences by comparing their situation. In the method of the research, a text analysis will be made through the life stories and poems of both poets. The subordination of women by the dominant male roles within the poems will be evaluated especially with Freud's theory of psychoanalysis. Moreover, the difficulties and struggles of women's experiences in the society, the confusion in their inner world, self-reckoning and preferences of absence will be examined within the framework of the "Trauma Theory" and "Confessionism" tradition. Based on these methods, Nilgün Marmara and Anne Sexton deciphered the perception of women imprisoned in divided identities and became a symbol of inequality by being pushed into the "private space", which is described as a cage in their poems. Furthermore, both poets have clearly demonstrated their acts of having a say over their own body, which manifested through suicide. As a result of the examination; both female poets unfortunately chose the absence as their method of existence and showed their rebellion against the order with their suicides, although they are important in terms of women's history with their successful works of art.
