Abstract (EN)
This thesis focuses on the analysis of Nilüfer Göle's views on religion and modernization. The primary aim is to analyze the relationship between religion and modernization in the context of secularization theories. The goal of the study is to elucidate where Göle's approaches to the subject of religion and modernization stand within the perspectives of secularization. The research is conducted theoretically, involving a review of existing literature. In this context, a literature review has been conducted, examining the development of secularization theory in conjunction with the modernization process and the changing dynamics of the relationship between religion and society. The theoretical exploration also scrutinizes how Göle analyzes the religious manifestations in Muslim societies. Nilüfer Göle addresses religious manifestations in modern society in numerous works. Within this framework, it is observed that she occasionally highlights the appearance of religion in modern society and provides analyses within the context of secularization. According to Göle, in the current era, there are various forms of modernities, including extraordinary modernities, and therefore, it is not possible to speak of a singular or homogeneous secularization. In this context, it is possible to discuss multiple secularisms shaped by the historical developments and socio-cultural forms of societies. Göle suggests that assumptions about the secular and the religious should be reconsidered not based on Western modernity's claims but through the experiences of modernization and secularization rooted in the historical development of non-Western societies. She emphasizes the need to revisit the experiences of modernization and secularization based on the historical development of non-Western societies, challenging the assumptions made by proponents of secularization theory who have not treated Islam as a separate research subject. Therefore, examining secularization in non-Western societies, as illustrated by Göle, is crucial. Keywords: Nilüfer Göle, Modernity, Religion, Secularization
