Abstract (EN)

In the current study, we aimed to retrospectively compare the MetS components of the nHPT patient group we followed with the control group. Considering the fact that MetS causes an increase in cardiovascular diseases and related morbidity and mortality, we thought that if the rate of MetS components was found to be high in the group with nHPT, it could contribute to the follow-up and treatment management of the patients in this group. The data of 88 patients with nHPT following up in Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Faculty of Medicine Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic and a control group of 80 people being similar in terms of age and gender were evaluated retrospectively. The height, weight, BMI, WC, HC, systolic and diastolic BPs, FPG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, and TG data that we recorded in relation to MetS were compared with the control group. 79 (89%) of the normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism patient group were female, and 9 (11%) were male, with a mean age of 59.36±9.33 years. Similar to this profile, 70 (87.5%) of the control group selected were found to be female, 10 (12.5%) were male, and the mean age was 56.64±10.73. Considering the evaluation of both groups according to the NCEPATP III MetS diagnostic criteria, MetS was found in 27 individuals (32.9%) in the nHPT group and 18 individuals (22.5%) in the control group. Thus, an increase in the prevalence of MetS was detected in patients with nHPT compared to the control group (p=0.032). Regarding the separately analyzed metabolic syndrome parameters, the mean WC was found to be 105.54±13.72 cm in the patient group with nHPT and 94.81±14.56 cm in the control group. Besides, the mean HC was 117.27±13.22 cm in the group with nHPT and 110.56±11.16 cm in the other group. Thus, in the group with nHPT, WC and HC were found to be statistically significantly increased compared to the control group without impaired Ca metabolism. In the group with nHPT, the mean systolic BP level was 135.73±20.64 mm Hg, and the diastolic BP level was 83.72±10.77 mm Hg. In the control group, mean systolic BP was found to be 131.12±82.37 mm Hg, and diastolic BP was 82.72±9.17 mm Hg. No statistical significance was detected between the two groups. Taking into account laboratory values examined, mean FPG level was 109.78 mg/dl in the patient group, while it was 96.58 mm Hg in the control group. Thereby, the FPG level was found to be significantly higher in the patient group with nHPT compared to the control group (p<0.001). Considering the lipid profile examined TC, LDL-C, and TG levels were found to be significantly increased in the nHPT group compared to the control group, whereas no significant difference was found in HDL-C levels. Thus, the lipid profile of patients with nHPT was found to be significantly more impaired than the control group. As a result, the prevalence of MetS was determined to be higher in patients with nHPT and the MetS components, especially WC, HC, FPG, and lipid profile, were worse than in the control group. In line with the results of our study, we can say that it should be followed the patient group with nHPT more closely in terms of MetS and its treatment compared to the general population, and we should be more careful in terms of the risk of cardiovascular disease that may develop due to MetS.
