The Roman Villa at Nysa and Maeandrum: Pottery findings and their evaluation

Abstract (EN)

The subject of this study is the Roman Period Red Slip Ceramics and Roman Coarse Ceramics, which were found in the Nysa Roman Villa excavations between the years 2017- 2019. The city, was settled from Hellenistic Period to Anatolian Seljuks. The ceramics finds found in the building show that diversity from the Hellenistic Period to the Byzantine Period. However, ceramics are both very few in number and in poor conditon. The sherds belonging to the typical glazed vessels of the Byzantine Period are also very few. The ceramics found in the building mainly belong to the Roman Impire Period. As a natural consequence of its location on the main roads of antiquity, vessels such as ESB, ESC, ARSW, and LRC are imported red slipped ceramics known in the city. In addition, a dominant group of ceramics in the building are classified as regional red slipped ceramics, which are the Lower Meander Valley Productions known in Western Anatolia. With this study, detected Roman Period ceramics were determined statistically by determining the groups they belong to according to the paste- slip features of the imported, regional and coarse ceramics detected in the Roman Villa. The ceramics, which were evaluated within the scope of the thesis were affect of political and economic developments by the transformation in the building, The ceramics, which were evaluated within the scope of the thesis show that by the affect of political and economic developments by the transformation in the building started in the 4th century AD and continued until the middle of 7th century. The usage of ceramics in the building continued its existence until the 12th century AD by going through various stages.
