Abstract (EN)

This research, which examines the academic achievements, interests, and methods-techniques used in teaching astronomy by prospective science and classroom teachers studying at Ordu University, is based on the mixed research method. The study group consists of students from the 2023-2024 academic year in the Classroom Teaching and Science Education programs at Ordu University Faculty of Education. The research comprises 163 teacher candidates selected through non-probabilistic (non-random) sampling technique. In the quantitative dimension of the research, an astronomy achievement test and an astronomy interest scale were used. The interest scale developed by Ertaş Kılıç and Keleş (2017) was used based on their study "Development of an Interest Scale for Astronomy: Validity and Reliability Studies." The achievement test developed by Okulu (2012) in the study "The Effect of Developed Astronomy Activities on the Astronomy Knowledge and Attitude Levels of Science and Technology Teacher Candidates" was utilized. In the qualitative dimension of the research, a semi-structured interview form was used as the data collection tool. Jamovi software was used for the analysis of quantitative data. Independent Samples T-test and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were employed in the analysis of quantitative data. Qualitative data were recorded during interviews and transcribed. The analysis process was conducted through induction based on the transcribed data. Regarding the differentiation of scores obtained from the achievement test and interest in astronomy based on the department, no significant difference was observed among the averages. A positive and significant relationship was found between astronomy achievement and interest levels. Modeling, virtual reality, web 2.0, activity, and invention methods are among the mostly preferred methods and techniques in teaching astronomy topics. The reasons for choosing the methods and techniques used in teaching astronomy topics mainly revolve around concretizing abstract concepts and emphasizing the permanence of learning. As a result of the research, it was found that teacher candidates have a low level of astronomy achievement but high interest in astronomy. Although their astronomy achievement level is low, their interest in astronomy is high, which may lead them to not prefer contemporary approaches in their chosen teaching methods and techniques.
