Multidimensional analysis of the relationship between school bus transportation and traffic accident (Ankara case)

In this study, existing school transportation in metropolitan counties of Ankara Province, traffic flow around schools and interaction of roads, their technical specifications and accident risk situations as well as other issues causing traffic congestion have investigated in many aspects. The locations of totally 51 primary and secondary schools which are directly affected by traffic in the metropolitan counties of Altındağ, Çankaya, Keçiören, Yenimahalle, Mamak, Sincan and Etimesgut in the Province of Ankara, drivers who are engaged in transportation of students in these schools and in vehicles used for such transportation, have studied in many aspects. Schools have listed in each county according to their risk situations by setting up an accident risk score for each school for the purpose of determining the affect of school locations for traffic accidents. Questionnaires have performed in order to determine general characteristic specifications of school bus drivers and their tendency to make traffic accidents, and data received subject to statistical analysis and relationship between general characteristic specifications of school bus drivers and traffic accidents which they have been involved in, have examined. In zoning and construction plans made by municipalities, it has discovered that parking areas, getting on-off areas, parking areas for school staff?s and students? parents? cars are not available neither permanently or temporarily, and it was suggested that a considerable improvement would be achieved in case the existing parking areas could be assigned for school buses particularly when students get on and get off. Furthermore, it was suggested that school bus drivers would get a special training course in cooperation with traffic organizations, municipalities and relevant chambers and that those drivers who do not possess such training certificates shouldn?t be allowed to drive school buses and it is recommended that a study must be carried out for the purpose of informing the whole society of the principles school bus transportation.Keywords: Traffic, statistics of traffic accidents, vehicle, school bus transportation, traffic around schools, status of schools in counties of Ankara
