Clothing tradition according to medieval travelogues and geographical works (IX.-XV. century)

One of the most basic human needs is to dress. For that, people's clothing is an ongoing situation, evolving from the past to the present. When we look at the historical process, it is seen that people covered/dressed their bodies in order to protect them from various factors, but in later periods they started to cover/dress for different meanings and purposes. Many issues such as when people started to dress, how they dressed and what they used it for arouse great curiosity. When a literature review is made, it is seen that there are many studies on this subject. However, what is reported about dressing from the view of travelers presents another dimension of the clothing. In the travelogues of the Middle Ages and the geographical works fed by them, the information about the clothing of the period sheds light on the present; as travelers and geographers respond to the curiosities of successors with the information they have witnessed and sometimes obtained from the authors before them. In line with the observations made by the travelers in the context of on-the-spot observation and examination; important information is obtained about many subjects such as what people dressed in the medieval world, what and how the people used them, how they were traded, how they were used in diplomacy. Thus, it reveals other dimensions of dressing, such as how people can express their gender, status, perception of the society in which they live, their beliefs, customs, economic status, culture, psychology and even power.
