The effect of secondary education 5th grade visual arts course in-course activities on students' empathic tendencies

In this study, it was investigated whether 5th grade secondary school students' visual arts course in-class activities had an effect on the students' empathic tendencies. This study is based on quantitative data; It was designed according to the pretest-posttest, control group, experimental screening model. The research group consists of a total of 42 students attending the 5th grade at X Secondary School in Uşak, Turkey. 21 of the students in the study group are in the experimental group and 21 in the control group. "KA-SI Child Empathic Tendency Scale" developed by Siyez and Kaya (2010) was used as a data collection tool. The data was collected in the 2022-2023 academic year and analyzed in the statistical package program. In this research, having people with general knowledge and expertise in qualitative research methods verify the study from various aspects is one of the measures that can be taken to ensure validity. Content validity was ensured by submitting the interview forms and analysis of the obtained data to expert review and receiving feedback. During the data analysis phase, independent sample t-Test, single-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used. Analysis of covariance is the most common way to control a variable, that is, to eliminate its effect. The logic of t-Test for unrelated samples, single-factor analysis of variance, and covariance analysis is to extract the change due to the common variable from the dependent variable and to determine whether the change in the dependent variable depends on the independent variable. A statistical package program was used to analyze the analyses. The scores obtained by the participants in the experimental and control groups on the KA-SI Empathic Tendency Child form were grouped separately as pretest and posttest and prepared for analysis.
