Examination of the relationship between 8th grade middle school students' mathematics study strategies, mathematic attitudes and achievement

It is critical for students to know how to study and learn mathematics, and to be willing to do so in achieving success in mathematics. In this context, the aim of the research is to examine the relationship between middle school students' mathematics study strategies, mathematics attitudes and achievements. The research was designed in relational screening method. The research was carried out on 630 students (318 girls, 312 boys) selected by simple random sampling method among 6742 eighth grade students studying in secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in a province located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Personal Information Form was used as data collection tool, Mathematics Study Strategies Scale was used to determine students' use of mathematics study strategies, and Mathematics Attitude Scale was used to reveal their attitudes towards mathematics lesson. Independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient Analysis and Simple Multiple Regression Analysis methods were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was found that students' use of mathematics study strategies was high and their mathematics attitudes were moderate. The use of mathematics study strategies by female students was found to be statistically significant at a higher level than males. The use of mathematics study strategies, mathematics attitude and success of the students who use supplementary resource books and have more weekly mathematics study hours were found to be significantly higher. It has been determined that there is a positive and significant relationship between mathematics study strategies, mathematics attitudes and mathematics achievement. It was determined that the use of mathematics study strategies and mathematics attitude together predicted students' mathematics achievement at the level of 10.9%. In this context, it is recommended that students use mathematics study strategies in order to increase their mathematics achievement and be supported in order to increase their mathematics attitude.
