A folk-scientific study on place names of Sumbas district of Osmaniye province

Giving a name to an entity is one of the most basic characteristics of human beings from past to present. Since the creation of human beings, there has been a need to give a symbolic name to beings in order to give meaning to beings and to distinguish them from others. Human beings do not make this naming alone, they do it together with the society they live in. When looked at from this perspective, it can be seen that while societies give meaning to themselves, they also attribute a different meaning to space. In the thesis titled "A Folkloric Study on Place Names of Sumbas District", which was prepared within the scope of naming studies within the scope of folklore, the place and location names existing in the region were classified and examined, and in this direction, inferences were obtained about where the names came from. The fact that no such study has been conducted on place names in Sumbas district in previous periods reveals the necessity of this thesis. As a matter of fact, the aim of the thesis here is to identify the names of the places and locations in the residential areas of the said district, with Sumbas being the center, and to reveal where these names come from in terms of folklore. For this purpose, almost all places and locations within the district were visited and researched, and detailed information on the subject was obtained by contacting competent resource persons. Thesis; It consists of Abbreviations, Introduction, Four Chapters, Conclusion, Suggestions, References and Curriculum Vitae. In the introduction section, the subject and purpose, justification, framework and method of the study are discussed. In the first part, the geographical features and population of Sumbas district, its status as a district and its settlement areas; In the second part, the history of the region, the settlements, the tribes that settled and the place names of these tribes; In the third part, the reason and meaning of the place names of Sumbas district are given; In the fourth chapter, the alphabetical order of place names in Sumbas district is discussed. In the Conclusion and Recommendations section, suggestions are made for possible studies to be carried out in the light of the data obtained as a result of our research.
