An evaluation of the instrument education process in non-formal music education institutions from the students' perspective: The case of Bolu province

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of the instrument education process by examining the opinions of students receiving instrument training in non-formal music education institutions in Bolu province. The research was conducted using the survey model, one of the qualitative research methods. In the study, students' reasons for receiving instrument training, their opinions and expectations regarding the training process, their instrument preferences, and their continuity in receiving training were analyzed. The data were collected through interview questions administered to 37 students receiving non-formal instrument education in three institutions that have been operating in Bolu for at least two years. According to the research findings, the students' reasons and expectations for receiving instrument education mainly include improving their skills and being able to play the pieces they love. It can also be stated that these expectations are largely met through the education they receive. Throughout the process, students dedicate a certain amount of time to individual practice, and the support of family and teachers is considered to be influential. Furthermore, it is understood that students have the opportunity to showcase their performances through concerts and generally experience excitement and happiness when participating in such events. Most students began their instrument training either of their own will or through the encouragement of their families. In addition, many interviewees emphasized the potential influence of teachers on students' commitment to their instruments and their continuity in education. Overall, the findings indicate that students have a positive perspective on instrument education. Based on these findings, suggestions have been provided to ensure a more effective and efficient non-formal instrument education process.
