Abstract (EN)
Peter Simon Pallas, a German-born zoologist and botanist who lived between 1741-1811, compiled a wide variety of animal species during his travels to Russian geography at the end of the 18th century and published his work Zoographia-Rosso-Asiatica (1811-1831). In this work, Pallas classified 875 different animal species by dividing them into subclasses, primarily mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, and included the equivalents of each species in different languages, especially Latin, English, French and Russian. Among these languages, there are also languages belonging to the Altaic language family, which is the main subject of our research. Tatar and its dialects, Yakut, Kyrgyz, Bashkir, Chuvash, Uzbek, Kazakh, Khakas and their dialects, Tuvan, Tofa, Teleut dialect, Kumyk and Nogai are Turkic languages; Buryat, Kalmyk and Dagur are also Mongolian languages. The subject of this study is the examination of the animal names belonging to the Turkic and Mongolic languages, which Pallas compiled from the Russian geography in the 18th century. In the study, the historical and modern Turkic equivalents of Turkish animal names are included, and their Mongolian equivalents, if any, are also indicated. The aim of the study is to examine the origins of the Turkic and Mongolic animal names that Pallas compiled from the Russian geography in the 18th century and to contribute to Altaic language research. In the study, all animal species were listed according to their equivalents in Turkey Turkish, and also the taxonomic names accepted today by Pallas's taxonomic nomenclature were indicated. When evaluated in this respect, it is expected that the study will also contribute to the science of biology.
