This project analyse the process of the creation of the Pan-EuropeanTransport Network connecting the European Union with the neighbouring regionsand Caucasus and Central Asia over Mersin Port in the long run as per the reportissued by EC-High Level Group dated November 2005 and also look through theEastern Mediterranean Ports on the aspect of being a potential hub port forEurope-Asia Container Lines. The project focuses on the incentives in establishing a continental transportnetwork stemming from the nature of the developments by globalisation. In thiscontext, the parallel processes of the acceleration of the multimodal connections ofMersin Port for integration to Pan European Transport Axes via railway andshort sea shipping and the potentials of an hub port serving for EasternMediterranean trade are explored. Moreover, cost comparison of Mersin Port andEastern Mediterranean Ports have been made in order to analyse the potentials forbetter integration to Pan European Transport Network. Furthermore, in theproject, the components of the Pan-European Transport Network, namely theTrans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T), the Pan-European TransportCorridors and Areas which include Turkey, Short Sea Shipping nodes andintermodal connections and the Eurasian transport routes are analysed. The project seeks to show that the Pan-European Transport Network hasbeen planned to ensure developments of integration with the neighbouringcountries and regions, including aspecially Turkey and gateway of Mersin Port. Itsconclusions will point out Turkey?s geographical location as significant for theenhancement of the whole project and thus Turkey will likely to take an active rolein the further development of the project.
