Abstract (EN)
Visual elements, have recently been used in sociology as a source of data. Films can be important database in the analysis of the social processes with their reflections to the screen. In particularly contemporary migratory events which can require readings of them in time. Under the title of "Reflection of Abroad to the Screen, Turkish Emigration and Cinema: Analysis of the Films with the Theme of Emigration between the Years of 1971-1994" this study frames readings of film contexts. This discussion bases on sociological analysis techniques, concepts and migration related concept and theories by focusing on Turkish emigration films made by Turkish cinema in that timeline. The study has an approach which combines several different study areas: sociology, sociology of migration, sociology of cinema and visual sociology. By being focused on making description of film readings in the methodological process, this research based on available and selected 20 films with the emigration topic of the Turkish film directors. Thus, films, have been scrutinized with their general context and readings of 56 characters in them. Necessary literature review was undertaken. Besides this, each film have been watched at least twice and the notes were taken. The data were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The research covers 5 chapters. While first two chapters were basing on conceptual and theoretical discussions, the third chapter summarises methodological process. The fourth chapter is data analysis section. At the first section of this chapter, selected films were generally introduced with their cinematical and sociological contexts. The second and third sections based on discussions over readings of the defined concepts in defined areas: sociology of migration (type of migration, reasons of migration, type of migrant, gender, decision of migration, work qualification, legality of migration, destination, push and pull factors of migration, results of the migration) and sociology (alienation, anomie, bureaucracy, socio-economical class, deviance, elite, life style, social role and status, gender, socialisation, stereotip, norm conflicts and other concepts). The final section of this chapter covers a trial of semiotic analysis which is a new approach for sociology to extend coverage of context analysis to the sequences of the three films in examples. During this trial process; visual descriptions, examination of indicators, binary oppositions, indicator and indicated were taken into account. Fifth chapter covers conclusion and recommendations. The study findings revealed that reflections of the migration on the screen overlaps previously defined outcomes of the migration period. Although the usage of such approach has some difficulties, visual elements, in the case of this study is cinema films can be used as database for tracing social processes such as migration. Moreover, it can be a necessity as well in certain conditions.
