Abstract (EN)

This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of children undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Conducted between August 2024 and March 2025, the research involved ten children over the age of seven who were hospitalized in the Pediatric Nephrology Unit of Mersin University Faculty of Medicine and met the sampling criteria. Data were collected using a "Descriptive Information Form" and a "Semi-Structured Interview Form." Face-to-face interviews were conducted, and audio recordings were obtained. Transcribed data were analyzed using MAXQDA 22 software through coding, theme development, and the examination of code-subcode relationships. The analysis resulted in eight main themes and 54 codes: emotional responses post-dialysis, challenges during the dialysis training process, physical symptoms, difficulties in daily life, family dynamics, social life, school experience, and social support. Emotional responses such as sadness, fear, and stress were frequently reported. During the training period, children experienced pain, sleep disturbances, restricted mobility, and school attendance difficulties. Physical symptoms included abdominal pain, nausea, headaches, and hypertension. In daily life, limitations such as the inability to run or use the bathroom at night were noted. Changes in family relationships were observed, with children spending less time with family members and exhibiting increased irritability. Social limitations included being unable to travel, go swimming, or stay overnight elsewhere. In school settings, children reported protective behaviors from peers, concealing their illness, difficulties carrying school bags, and absenteeism due to peer bullying. Mothers were identified as the primary source of emotional and practical support. The findings indicate that children undergoing peritoneal dialysis face significant emotional, physical, and psychosocial challenges. It is recommended that healthcare providers implement family-centered care principles and offer targeted educational interventions to support these children throughout the dialysis process.
