Abstract (EN)

Due to the psychological and some physical benefits they provide to people, the number of pet animals is increasing all over the world. However, studies have shown that the bacteria carried by pet animals are transmitted to their owners and the environment. Antibiotic resistance factors that these bacteria have or transmit are considered as an increasing risk for human health. It has been determined that antibiotic resistance in Gram negative bacteria is increasing rapidly, as well as Gram positive bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, which have caused treatment problems, especially hospital infections, since the past. In this study, skin swabs were taken from 30 cats and 30 dogs who came to the clinics for treatment. Gram negative bacteria in these swabs were identified and their resistance to antibiotics commonly used in treatment was investigated. Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp. and Salmonella spp. were detected in isolates. While Pseudomonas spp. was not detected at all in dog samples, Salmonella spp. was the most dominant species in cats. Only one isolate of Enterobacter aerogenes demonstrated multidrug resistance. The most resistant strain is Pseudomonas spp. isolated from cats. The most common antibiotic resistance is ciprofloxacin with 9.52%.
