Abstract (EN)

Gustave Courbet stood out as one of the most important representatives of 19th century art. Challenging the traditional understanding of the period with his understanding of art, Courbet created a unique style by using a palette knife instead of a brush in his paintings. By using the palette knife technique, he achieved a strong texture and form effect, giving the surface realistic movement and vitality. This technique played an important role both in Courbet's language of expression and in the development of the Realism movement. This study aims to analyse Gustave Courbet's palette knife technique in terms of plastic expression and to evaluate the contribution of this technique to both the artist's expression and the artistic development of the period. In the research, Courbet's works were analysed in a thematic order using qualitative method and plastic analysis method. In addition, based on these analyses, how the palette knife technique can be used in practice was discussed and evaluations were made in this context. In addition, Courbet's innovative approach not only influenced the Realism movement, but also proved to be an important milestone in the shaping of modern art. For this reason, this study also aims to understand the depth and periodical effects of Realism through this technique Courbet used in his paintings.
