Examining the platform economy and its effects on working individuals

In this study, the focus is on platform economy, which has emerged as a result of digitalization and free market economy and is still considered a new economic model. The various aspects of this economic model are analyzed based on the views of individuals working within the scope of the platform economy. With this aim, inferences are sought under five themes, including motivation, working conditions and rights, income generation, problems, and expectations for the future. Primary data from individuals working based on the platform economy was obtained through the qualitative research method of interview. Six participants, who were reached through purposive sampling method and volunteered to participate in the research, constituted the sample of the research. Participants were included from various groups working under the umbrella of the platform economy and from different gender and age groups to ensure diversity. Adapted from the question set developed by Broughton et al. (2018), 15 questions were directed and answers were obtained. The data obtained from the interviews was subjected to descriptive analysis and the resulting findings were evaluated. The findings obtained showed that the platform economy offers many advantages for individuals while also having some disadvantages. Advantages include the opportunity to work from home, flexibility, the opportunity to determine their own work, and the opportunity for additional income. Disadvantages include the lack of insurance, social rights, and employment security, as well as uncertain working conditions and unstable income. It was also found that platform workers may face financial difficulties during periods of decreased job demands and that saving is difficult. While platform workers look optimistically towards the future in relation to this model, it is also understood that various risks and uncertainties may be a source of concern for such individuals.
