Development of a tool for accurately predicting postpartum hemorrhage

Abstract (EN)

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the most significant complications in the postpartum period. The accurate determination of bleeding volume affects the timing of interventions for PPH. The aim of this research is to develop a prototype tool for the accurate detection the volume of postpartum hemorrhage. This research is a methodological study. In the first stage of the research, superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and cellulose's liquid absorption capacities have been calculated by using the tea bag method. Experiments have been performed by using an isotonic solution and plasma. The upper layer of the bleeding tracing pad is made of fabric that facilitates liquid transmission to the lower layer. The lower part consists of a polyethylene film layer that prevents liquid passage. In the middle part of the pad, an adequate quantity of cellulose and SAP is positioned to capture 300 ml of liquid. In the second section of the pad, an amount of cellulose and SAP placed to trap 200 ml of liquid. Hydrophobic bands are positioned between the two sections to impede liquid flow into the second section until the first section is filled. In this way, it is aimed to help health professionals to make more accurate predictions by assessing the amount of bleeding. In the second stage of the research, a signaling system is implemented at the 500 ml level, which represents the limit value for postpartum hemorrhage. When the liquid level exceeds the preset critical level, the system detects it and sends a warning message to the mobile phones of the corresponding. A prototype of the bleeding tracing pad has been developed as a result of the study. It is thought that industrial production of the prototype will enhance the accuracy of predicting postpartum hemorrhage and enable timely intervention to acute bleeding.
