Significance of preoperative stoma location, postoperative complications of stoma, adaptation to stoma and effect on patient quality of life

Although the Ostomy opens to improve the condition of the patients, it affects the whole of person life. The ostomy inevitably changes the individual life style and quality. Ostomy may be temporary or permanent. At the most common cause of ostomy colorectal cancer surgeons, although by protecting the sphincters attempt to increase their quality of life, in some patients preservation of sphincters is not possible and stoma are formed to permanent. The studies revealed with that permanent or temporary stoma patient have many problems such as adapting to the stoma, stoma care and being able to resume normal sociocultural and physical activities. Patients can social isolate themselves for this and similar reasons. At the same time, due to stoma complications and problems, may further impair its quality of life and its adaptations. So the goal of this study: Between patients who with ostomy site marked before operation and not marked patients, investigation difference of the complications of stoma, adaptation and quality of life of patients. Determine the problems of adaptation of the ostomy site, whether the ostomy causes restraint in daily activities in patients and whether quality of life has changed by marking the ostomy site. The University of Bülent Ecevit Ethics Committee approved this study. The study consisted of 112 patient who opened stoma at the University of Bülent Ecevit Department of Surgery between 2014 and 2017. To be eligible, patients had to meet the following inclusion criteria; Patients with mental status who do not have additional psychological distress and who are accept to fill in the compliance scale and quality of life form for ostomy individuals who have ostomy opened in our hospital and who are followed up in the stoma unit. In the fourth week after surgery, quality of life and ostomate adaptation form applied to patient. At the same time in our ostomy and wound care unit, patients were clinically followed and recorded for ostomy complications in postoperative follow-up. When the demographic characteristics of the population included in the study are evaluated, 58 of the 112 patients (51.8%) were male, 54 (48.2%) were females. The ages of the cases ranged from 26 to 88 years with an average age of 58.45 years (59.00 ± 10.14 standard deviation). 41 cases (36.6%) were marked ostomy, 71 (63.3%) ostomy sites were not marked.
