Investigation of motivation levels of elite basketball players playing in professional leagues

The main purpose of this research is to determine the relationship of elite-level basketball players' communication with their coaches with the success motivation of basketball players, taking into account the characteristics that basketball players will indicate in their personal information forms. This research was conducted in the Descriptive Screening Model and the causal comparison pattern. While active licensed basketball players formed the universe of the study in the 2022-2023 season, the sample group consisted of 372 basketball players who competed at the professional level in the Turkish Basketball Leagues in the same season. For the athletes who took part in the universe and sample of the study; a) Sports-Specific Achievement Motivation Scale and Personal Information Form were used. In the comparison of the scale scores according to the gender types of the participants, no significant difference was found in the answers related to the Sports- Specific Achievement Motivation Scale. However, significant differences were found according to the age variable. Another variable that affects the findings of the study is the active basketball playing time of the athlete. When comparing the scale scores according to the position played by the participants, a significant difference was found in the sub-dimensions of the Motivation to Approach Success and the Motivation to Avoid Failure (p<0.05). On the other hand, no significant difference was found in the sub-dimension of the Motivation to Show Strength (p>0.05). Accordingly, a significant difference was found between the players who played the Guard – Forward and Guard – Pivot positions in the sub- dimension of the Motivation to Approach Success. Dec. In the sub–dimension of the Motivation to Avoid Failure, a significant difference was found between those who played the Striker - Pivot position. Dec.
