Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was willed to analyze the effect of psychological birth order (grandchild, middle child, small child, only child) on individualist- communitarian-relational self types. The study was done with 200 individuals working in Istanbul between the years 2014 and 2015. So as to determine psychological birth order of the individuals, "White-Campbell Psychological Birth Order Inventory", adaptation of which was done by Kalkan (2005: 170), and "Personal Verse Form" were utilized. "Correlation, Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis H, Kolmogorov Smirnov and Anova" tests were used for the analysis of the data. When self-scale levels were gone into according to psychological birth order, it was found that the largest percentage 39.60 referred carefully-cared/cherished (only child) in individualist self-scale level; the largest percentage 37.21 referred carefully-cared/cherished (only child) in relationality self-scale level; the largest percentage 40.95 referred cute/persuasive (small child) in communitarian self-scale level. When self-scale levels according to psychological birth order in men was analyzed, positively meaningful low level relationship between relational self-type and satisfying/regulatory (grandchild) birth order, positively meaningful low level relationship between cute/persuasive (small child) birth order and communitarian self - type, positively meaningful low level relationship between communitarian self - type and carefully - cared/cherished (only child) birth order were identified. When analyzing self – scale levels in women by order of birth, a low level of positive meaningful relation between individualist self – type and satisfying/regulatory (grand child) birth order was found. A low level of positive meaningful relation was found between relationality - self type and left – off/ignored birth order (middle child). No meaningful relation between relational self – type and carefully – cared/cherished birth order (only child) was found. A low level of positive meaningful relation between communitarian self – type and left – off/ignored (middle child) as well as cute/persuasive (small child) birth orders was found. When psychological birth order in men according to family type they lived in was analyzed, no meaningful result was seen. Women couldn' t be taken to the analysis according to family type they lived in. The reason of this stemmed from the fact that all women in the sample lived/are living as nuclear family. There is no women sample living in extended family. When self - scale levels according to psychological and real birth order was analyzed, no meaningful relationship between grandchild - middle child -small child-only child and individualist – relational - communitarian self scale levels was found. Key Words: Psychological Birth Order, Real Birth Order, Self, Communitarian Self, Relational Self, Individualist Self.
