Abstract (EN)

Purpose:Adhesions that occur in the abdomen in the postoperative period are a situation that surgeons frequently encounter. This situation has serious consequences that cause an increase in mortality.Various experimental treatments have been applied to prevent adhesions for years.Despite the frequency of experimental studies, a widely applied result could not be obtained in the clinic. Red Ginseng (Rg) is a plant with antitumoral activity, which is especially in Chinese prescription, provides improvement in cardiac functions, is effective in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and has anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of Rg on postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions. Materials and Method: In the study, 30 rats were divided into three groups of 10. Cecal abrasion model was applied to the rats. Abraded cecum was divided into Control, Serum Physiological and Rg groups. It was taken into the abdomen by direct application in the 1st group, by applying the Serum Physiological in the 2nd group, by applying Rg in the 3rd group. Laparotomy was performed again on the 21st day after the procedure. It was evaluated macroscopically and microscopically. Results: One rat died during the study. No significant difference was found as a result of macroscopic evaluations (p=0.06) . In the microscopic evaluation, it was determined that Rg was effective in terms of inflammation compared to the Serum physiological group, was effective in terms of vascular proliferation compared to the control group, but was not effective in terms of fibrosis. Conclusion: As a result of statistical data, a clear anti-adhesion effect of Rg was not detected. More comprehensive studies are needed. Keywords: Red Ginseng, postoperative adhesion, intra-abdominal adhesion
