In the context of regime security North Korea's nuclear activities and regional reflections

North Korea is a nuclear weapon possessor state who has priority goal of regime security. North Korea, which gives importance to nuclear weapons as a supportive element of regime security, was able to provide regime security before conducting its first nuclear test in 2006. In this study, North Korea's nuclear activities are explained within the framework of the regime security approach, using the concepts of Juche, which is the basis of its ideological political culture, and Songun, which is its military policy. The most important indicator that the regime can survive without its nuclear capacity is the fact of, North Korea has ensured regime security before it has nuclear weapons. Nevertheless, considering the political and ideological system of North Korea, it is seen that nuclear weapons have a great important, complementary and supportive position in regime security. By continuing its nuclear activities, North Korea has challenged the international nonproliferation efforts for years. The US and UN led denuclearization policies was insufficient to halt North Korea's nuclear activities. In addition, this study explains the US approaches to creating a nuclear-free North Korea by making use of multiple consensus processes such as the Agreed Framework and the Six-Party Talks negotiations. The study claims that the policies implemented failed to denuclearize North Korea. The fact that North Korea is a nuclear-armed power by continuing its nuclear activities despite the US initiatives and sanctions is the most important indicator that it will not give up its nuclear power.
