The effect of role conflict and ambiguity on alienation: A case study in Alanya Municipality

Role conflict and role ambiguity constitute a major obstacle for employees to comprehend their rights and responsibilites in the organization and fulfill their roles properly. An important outcome of role conflict and role ambiguity is organizational alienation which cause employees to become estranged from their work and organization. The main purpose of this study is to test the effect of rol conflict and role ambiguity on organizational alienation. The universe of this study, Alanya Municipality, has merged with sixteen other municipalities to fulfill the Act No 6360 known as Metropolitan Municipal Law. It was predicted that this organizational change would cause serious organizational problems and thus a research idea was initiated. The research model was finalized after the in-depth interviews conducted with the directors in Alanya Municipality. The research was conducted in Alanya Municipality which has 2600 employees. A quantitative approach was adapted and fully structered surveys were distributed to collect data. The collected data was analyzed via a statistical package program and the profile of the participants was determined firstly. Then the data was analyzed with factor analysis, t-Test, ANOVA analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis. As a result of the analysis it was found that the demographic and occupational characteristics of the participants induce a statistically meaningful change on rol conflict, role ambiguity and organizational alienation factors. Furthermore, some statistically meaningful correlations between the rol conflict & role ambiguity factors and the organizational alienation factors were found. Lastly, the regression analysis revealed that role conflict and role ambiguity has an effect on organizational alienation. Keywords: Role Conflict, Rol Ambiguity, Organizational Alienation
