The role of the European Union's free trade agreements in promoting sustainable trade practices

This study critically looks at how the Free Trading Agreements (FTAs) of the European Union help partner nations advance sustainable trading practices. Using a qualitative research approach, the study uses semi-structured interviews with policymakers, trade officials, and civil society representatives to evaluate implementation challenges and results, as well as in-depth textual analysis of a few chosen free trade agreements (FTAs), with a particular emphasis on the Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD) chapters. The study is framed by the Internationalization Theory and Eclectic Paradigm, which explain how political will, institutional contexts, and integration into global value chains influence the adoption and implementation of sustainability laws. The results show that while the EU has gradually incorporated labor and environmental norms into its trade agreements, partner governments' actual implementation of these policies differs greatly. While nations with inferior governance confront significant challenges, more successful adoption of sustainable trade practices is positively connected with stronger institutional frameworks and regulatory capacities. The EU has promoted normative dispersion and raised awareness through its emphasis on capacity-building, cooperative enforcement mechanisms, and stakeholder engagement, including the participation of Domestic Advisory Groups (DAGs). However, their full implementation is hampered by these rules' limited enforceability as well as political and economic limitations in partner nations. This study emphasizes that although EU free trade agreements (FTAs) help to integrate sustainability standards into global trade, their effects on concrete labor and environmental results are still unequal. These results demonstrate the necessity of complementing policies and increased institutional support to increase the effectiveness of sustainability clauses in free trade agreements. By offering sophisticated insights into the challenges of enforcing normative trade rules in various political and economic circumstances, the study adds to the larger conversation on trade policy and sustainable development.
