Sahne arkasında bir çevirmen: Üretken bir çeviri öznesi olarak Seçkin Selvi

Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of "field", "habitus" and "capital" (Bourdieu, 1990), this thesis positions Seçkin Selvi as a female agent of translation. Selvi has proved to be a versatile and prolific agent as she has been active in the literary field since 1957 as a translator, editor and theatre critic as well as publisher and journalist. Hence, this thesis argues that Selvi has been subject to the conditions of the field she has been in, and that her success and survival as an agent of translation in the field has been guaranteed by her rich symbolic capital and professional habitus. To do so, this study draws on a rich extratextual (Toury, 1995) analysis of Selvi's extensive corpus, biographical and archival data, the interviews she gave, the events she participated, the newspaper reports she appeared in, events, organizations, fairs she participated in, as well as the e-mail interview I conducted with her. To that end, it first reviews agent-oriented studies, which have been in a growing trend with the social turn in translation studies, and then examines the Bourdieusian concepts of field, habitus and capital. Further, this study scrutinizes Selvi's agency and her cultural, social and symbolic capital. It lastly explores her primary and secondary (translatorial) habitus and concludes with a critical discussion of Selvi's case in regards to the relationship between the concepts of field, habitus and capital. Bringing a female agent of translation from backstage to stage, the findings of this study will hopefully inspire further studies on female agents in translation studies and contribute to a more humanized translation studies in general.
