Abstract (EN)
Art has always been one of humanity's most significant companions in expressing emotions since the dawn of existence. Turkish art, evolving across centuries, has developed into a cohesive and unique tradition. The 19th century marked a critical period for the Ottoman Empire, as it faced the imminent threat of disintegration. In response to these challenges, the empire took steps towards Westernization, including the establishment of the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (School of Fine Arts), which would later become a key institution in fostering artistic education. The military artists who graduated from this school, such as Hikmet Onat, Sami Yetik, Ali Sami Boyar, Celâl Esad Arseven, and Mehmet Ruhi Arel, played a crucial role in connecting art with society during the final years of the Ottoman Empire. Through their creative works, these artists aimed to convey the nation's circumstances to foreign audiences and foster a cultural dialogue. During the First World War and the Turkish War of Independence, these painters assumed significant responsibilities, using their art to reflect the nation's struggles and aspirations. Following the proclamation of the Republic on October 29, 1923, these artists contributed to promoting and communicating the revolutionary changes and reforms to the public. Their works not only preserved the essence of traditional Turkish art but also embraced the modern artistic perspectives of the West, laying the foundation for the global recognition of Turkish painting. The resulting creations from this era stand as enduring documents of historical and cultural processes, capturing the lifestyles of various segments of society. These artworks have forged a profound connection between society and art, underscoring their lasting significance in the narrative of Turkish art history.
