A RESEARCH ON THE ADHESION BETWEEN AGGREGATE AND BITUMEN IN THE SURFACE TREATMENT WITH RESPECT TO THE USE OF MATERIALS UNDER THE WATER EFFECT (M.Sc.Thesis) Ebru ARIKAN GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY July 1997 ABSTRACT In this study, the variation of adhesion of aggregate and bitumen components of the surface treatment, which constitutes an important part of the Turkish highway net, with respect to the materials, which constitute the pavement, the temperature at the moment of adhesion of aggregate and bitumen and the anti-stripping agent, has been searched by experimental method. Among the materials of the pavement, limestone and basalt have been used as the aggregate, 150-200 and 60-70 penetrated asphalt cement as the bitumen component, 150°C-120°C-90°C as the temperature degrees of connecting aggregate contact warmth and Lilamin AD-4F as the anti- stripping agent. The adhesion has been measured in conditions proximate to the practice and the results have been shown on graphics. In the conditions of the contact temperatures of the experimented bitumen and aggregate, the adhesion levels of the materials which have been used and the advantages of the use with anti-stripping agent, have been compared.
