Abstract (EN)

Speed humps are one of the most preferred methods to calm down the traffic congestion. The main purpose of creating bumps on the roads along a certain length is to reduce the speed of vehicles passing through this area. Therefore, it is important to investigate issues such as the compliance of speed bump applications with current standards, whether they reach the determined speed reduction targets and their effects on the vehicle/passenger, such as material damage to vehicles. The lack of both international and Turkish resources in this field has been the source of motivation for this study. The aim of this thesis is to search for the most safe, comfortable and economical speed bump for drivers and pedestrians on urban roads by compiling international and Turkish sources on speed bumps. For this purpose, the literature review has been systematically compiled and examined over the years. The evolution of speed bumps over time is presented. In addition, in order to determine the most ideal type of speed bumps, a comparison was made between them; analyzes and comparisons were made to determine the most appropriate speed bump by looking at the impact on materials, noise, vibration, economy, sustainability, design, safety, comfort and vehicles. When the bump studies are considered in general, as a result of the examinations and comparisons made, it is the most preferred type of hump in our country because of the fact that short humps are more economical than asphalt and concrete bumps and they are easier to install. However, since its deterrent feature and sustainability are not as effective as long and wide bumps, it is not preferred in other countries. As a result of the studies, it was concluded that the effect on the vehicles, the effect on the driver and passengers, the benefit to the traffic density, the precautions against traffic accidents and the type of hump that should be used in the long term should be the flat-topped hump made of asphalt.
