Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine and explain the historical, social, cultural and religious life of Yazidis living in villages in Idil, Sirnak and those living in villages in Midyat, Mardin. In order to explain the theoretical part of the study, it has been referenced in History ofIslamic Sects, sources about Yazidis and scientific researches made in this field. Besides extensive observations, interview technique has been used in the field study. Yazidism is assumed to have a philosophical system 'Syncretism' trying to combine different thoughts, beliefs and doctrines. There are several views about name, history and origin of Yazidism in which traces and influence of religions in Iran and Mesopotamia are seen. Yazidis consider themselves as chosen people of Tavus Angel. So, it isn't possible to enter Yazidism and to switch between castes. Though Yazidism starts with Sheikh Adi who lived in 12th century, its root goes back to Adam. According to Yazidis, God created the universe, angels and Adam, but then preferred to remain passive. Besides this, Yazidis worship and believe in Tavus Angel donated with godlike features, whose dignity was increased and to whom control of the world was given by God. Prohibitions and rules about Yazidism are explained in Yazidis two holy Mushaf-ı Resh and Kitab al-Jilwah. There isn't a place for performing religious practices all together in Yazidism, which has been orally transmitted. They perform daily religious practices individually, but rituals and festivals are important for them. In certain periods of year, Yazidis with good financial situation gather in holy Lalish Temple in Lalish Valley, which is 58 kilometers away from Mosul, and perform pilgrimage.
