Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to examine the misconceptions and mistakes of 8th grade secondary school students about algebraic expressions. Descriptive survey model has been used in this study. The study group of the research consists of 120 students studying in Afyonkarahisar city centre, districts and towns in the 2017-2018 academic year. Data were collected with the algebra test, prepared by the researcher, consisting a total of 30 questions including 15 multiple-choice questions and 15 open questions requiring written answers. Data were analysed with the descriptive analysis method. As a result of the study, it has been found that students are successful in calculating the value of algebraic expressions based on variables in algebraic expressions; unsuccessful in explaining the meaning of visual and algebraic expressions and solving equations. In addition, it has been noted that some students made various mistakes in the visual and geometric projection of algebraic expressions, operation selection and prioritization, equation formation and solving, and they have misconceptions. Moreover, it was observed that some students could not reflect their success in arithmetic operations on algebraic expressions.
