Artistic use of smoke firing techniques as a means of expression in ceramics

This thesis examines how smoke firing techniques are used as a means of artistic expression in ceramic art. Each smoke firing technique is analyzed through a historical lens, evaluating their application in contemporary ceramic art and interpreting them through the perspectives of contemporary artists. Smoke firing techniques are a powerful form of expression that reflect the historical and cultural richness of ceramics, both visually and emotionally. The ceramic medium, which predates the invention of writing and has closely accompanied human history, fulfills some of humanity's most primal and spiritual needs. Moreover, the kiln firing methods that we refer to today as smoke firing techniques date back to the beginnings of ceramic history and mark significant milestones in the development of modern ceramic technology. The complex and profound story of earth, fire, water, and humanity finds its essence in the art of ceramics. Smoke firing techniques impart an organic and natural aesthetic to ceramics. The use of these techniques deepens the artist's relationship with the material, providing a sense of involvement in the firing process, which is an essential part of production. This research explores the relationships and artistic concerns of artists who have made one or more types of smoke firing techniques a part of their artistic practice. The research demonstrates how smoke firing techniques are effective in creating a sense of naturalness and spontaneity in ceramic works.
