The method of things: Art, gender and ethnomathematics

The thesis examines the links between traditional handcraft production practices, art, gender, and cultural mathematics. The research methods used in this artistic study integrate theory and praxis and are supported by insights from prominent contemporary and historic artists, scientists, and thinkers. The essay examines the influence of prevailing systems of domination and hierarchy, such as nature-culture, women-men, science-art, tradition, and technology, on art practices. It discusses the reflections and implications of these systems throughout history up to the present day. The essay also references diverse productions and pluralist, interdisciplinary approaches, contributing to a broader understanding of the issues. This study specifically focuses on handicrafts, which women consider a means of expression and performance, and the tacit knowledge that underpins them. Throughout history, various productions have been created through interpretation and criticism, exploring the similarities and differences between arts, technologies, and sciences, as well as their interactions. This work presents the culmination of processes and productions, focusing on recording cultural memory through the arts and sciences. The interplay between material forms and social discourse is explored through hand-labour practices, drawing, printing, internet networks, video, and experimental electronics.
