Abstract (EN)
This study examines the category of probabilistic modality in the work "Yûsuf u Zeliha" by Şeyyâd Hamza, written in the 14th-century Old Anatolian Turkish period. The probabilistic modality in the couplets is examined, and its contribution to the linguistic structure of the period is evaluated. This work was selected because it is one of the early works of Old Anatolian Turkish and contains a rich linguistic richness reflecting the linguistic characteristics of the period. The work holds a significant place both because it sheds light on the development of Oghuz Turkish and because it bears influences from Arabic and Persian. The thesis aims to analyze the modal morphemes in the work, revealing how these modalities enrich the semantic world of the text and the literary aspect of the period. Modality is a linguistic category that reflects the speaker's attitude and thought towards a situation or event. The thesis examines the historical development of modality and the classifications made by various linguists. Modality is a marker with various meanings such as possibility, obligation, permission, and desire, indicating a specific attitude towards an action or situation. The thesis examines probability markers grammatically through markers such as "bolay ki, gerek, yoksa, ger." It examines how these modalities express situations such as prediction, uncertainty, probability, desire, and wish in the couplet, highlighting their grammatical developments in past periods. This study provides an analysis of the use of probability modality markers in the text of the Old Anatolian Turkish period and constitutes an important source. In this respect, the work is an important source in understanding the historical development of the Turkish language.
