New reality in Soviet literature: Gulag literature and stories on Kolyma or the memory space of time

This thesis explores the narratives of Soviet camp literature that revolve around Varlam Shalamov's "new prose" manifesto and the memory space of Kolyma. The Gulag camp subject, previously addressed by notable authors such as A. Solzhenitsyn, O. Volkov, B. Sinyavsky, S. Dovlatov, V. Grossman, V. Shalamov, and Ye. Ginzburg, is specifically delimited within the context of Kolyma as a place of memory, with a focus on V. Shalamov's Kolyma Tales series and Ye. Ginzburg's novels "Journey into the Whirlwind" and "Within the Whirlwind". In the stories and works written within the framework of the "new prose" rules, which have similarities with the existentialism movement, the camp environment, living and working conditions, people who degenerate while struggling for existence, prisoner types, women, nature, family members outside the camp, and the language spoken in the camp were examined under separate headings. Through the lens of memoir and documentary, the predominant motifs of good and evil that create internal contradictions are interrogated. Ultimately, the works of V. Shalamov and Ye. Ginzburg, both of whom survived extreme conditions, are evaluated as a legacy of memory for future generations.
