The effects of Plantago major on oral flora and immun system in experimantal diabetic rats with streptozotocin

Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrine disorder in all the world. Some changes occurs in the diabetic patients' immune system and they are more susceptible to the development of infection. In recent years in studies, new alternatives in the treatment of diabetes connection with the identification of in many natural plant the effect of diabetes are studied. This study aimed to show that effects of Pl. major on oral flora and the immune system with microbiological and biochemical markers of in rats with experimental diabetes. 30 male Wistar albino rats as animal material used in the study and separated into 5 groups (control, diabetic, Pl.major, diabetic + Pl.major and diabetic+insülin). All groups during the four week trial fed standard chow and water. Diabetes and diabetes with Pl.major to form each group of rats (65 mg / kg) was applied as a single dose STZ intraperitoneally. Following the formation of diabetes, by calculating the amount of water consume per rat 0.3 mg / ml of Pl. major extract were added to drinking water of rat groups with diabetes plus Pl. major and Pl.major per day . In addition, at the beginning of trial, after the creation of diabetes and end of trial swab samples were taken from rats for the purpose of determining the number of total aerobicbacteria in oral mukosa. Serum glikoz, TNF-α, IL-6, defensin and nesfatin-1 levels in diabetes + Pl. major groups were found to be significantly lower than the diabetes group, but serum insulin and IGF-1 levels in diabetes + Pl. major groups were significantly higher than diabetes group. The number of total bacteria on oral mucosa and IL-10 levels have not identified any significant difference between two groups. With this study; applied of Pl. major in rats show that reduce to blood glucose level and to regulate the immune system like effect of insulin at diabetes. In light of the data obtained from the study; Pl. major can be used as a supplement in the treatment of diabetes and insülin resistance in later years.
