Abstract (EN)
It is a well-known fact that the studies carried out in the field of translation in the world and especially in our country so far are not adequate. This study is an attempt to present a new tool to academics and students of Translation Studies. To this end Jerome David Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye and its two different translations have been analyzed, using the model of translation criticism according to Skopos Theory. In the first chapter of this three-partite study, first the basic concepts necessary to understand Hans J. Vermeer's Skopos Theory are described; then, the levels of the translation criticism of this theory are explained along with the key concepts in translation criticism. In the second chapter of the study, readers are informed about Salinger and his cult novel The Catcher in the Rye. Then, Holden's language in the Anglo- American and the Turkish cultures and the speech elements in the target and source texts are discussed so as to equip the reader with necessary concepts used in the following section. In the third chapter, which concerns the critical analysis of the target and source texts, the function of target texts is discussed. The next step involves the study of speech elements in order to question the intra-textual coherence of the target texts. Since the second chapter of the study gives additional information which aims at clarifying the function of the source text, only the intra-textual coherency of the source text is questioned in this part. In the last part of the third chapter, a comparative analysis is carried out. Finally, the issues as to how far the commissioners and the translators have reached their skopos and whether the skopos is ever reachable are questioned in the conclusion part, parallel to the target described in the introduction.
