Sünbül Sinan, the sufism essay of Sinâneddin Yusuf b. Ya'kûb el-Amâsî el-Halvetî

Sünbül Sinan Efendi was a prominent Sufi scholar during the Ottoman period. He was the founder of the Sunbuliyya order, a branch of the Halvetiyya order. Sünbül Sinan Efendi was a figure at the center of debates regarding the religious legitimacy of the sema/devran dhikr of the period. This was due to the widespread practice of the sema/devran within the Sunbuliyya order. One of his works, "Tasawwuf Risalesi," not only provides us with insights into his Sufi ideas but also defends the legitimacy of the devran dhikr. In the treatise, he defends the devran as an act of worship, based on the Quran and Sunnah, against those who consider performing dhikr while standing to be a "dance," or innovation. He supports this view with verses 72-75 of Surah Az-Zumar and various hadiths. He explained the dhikr of devran by drawing an analogy with the way angels dhikr God in their rotations, as well as the way servants on earth dhikr God in the same way. At the end of the treatise, he also supported it with a fatwa from Zenbilli Ali Efendi regarding the legitimacy of devran dhikr. This study is important for understanding the legitimacy of devran dhikr in the 16th century. This study attempts to identify Sünbül Sinan Efendi's views on devran through his work "Tasavvuf Risalesi."
