A research on designer's knowledge in producing sustainable furniture

Day-by-day nature is rapidly destroyed due to uncontrollable production. This situation causes people to worry about the future which will happen on this very planet. However, There are a lot of researchs to be done in many sectors which can eliminate the anxiety and take precautions. Sustainable furniture designers and manufacturers are considered to unsatisfactory in sustainable furniture production. In this proposed study, the author aims to establish criteria for sustainable production of furnituret, together with furniture designers in Turkey. Sub-objectives of the thesis are; to determine the extent, the methods which designers use during sustainable production according to these criteria and whether they have knowledged of the subject and to investigate the correct system for the sustainable furniture production. The field chosen for this study is Turkey. Scope is taken under employed designers who don't work in a company and emloyees who work in companies. Obersvation methods were used to indicate furniture designers. The method of this dissertation is both qualitative and quantitative. Life cycle design, sustainable production certification criteria and ministry studies have been used to determine sustainable furniture production criteria. The obtained extract was filtered. Sustainable furniture criteria in the framework of the studies are determined in 4 chapters. These headings are disposed by raw material, production, use and after use. These criteria were applied to the questionnaire of the designers. Looking at the survey results, it is clear that furniture designers fulfill 54,67% of sustainable furniture production criteria. It is evident that rapid and effective steps must be taken in order to develop sustainable furniture production. According to expert opinions, it is understood that the government does not give incentives to this issue. Today's world continues to be destroyed rapidly and it is very important for authorized people to take necessary precautions. With incentives, trainings and the development of facilities, new methods of production should be found. Sustainable production should be passed on in every sector. Furniture production is one of these sectors.
