Fair play orientations of athletes competing in team and combat sports

The aim of this study is to examine the Fair Play orientations of athletes competing in team and competitive sports in terms of various demographic variables. General survey model was used in the research. 336 athletes actively participating in team and combat sports in Rize province in 2022-2023 participated in our study. In order to reach the purpose of the study, a personal information form developed by the researcher, "Multidimensional Sportsmanship Orientation Scale (MSSAS)" developed by Vallerand, Briere, Blanchard and Provencher (1997) and adapted into Turkish by Sezen-Balçıkanlı (2010) were used to measure the sportsmanship orientations of the participants. MS Office Word and Windows MS Excel spreadsheet programs were used to organize the data and make graphics, and statistical tests were analyzed through Windows SPSS 26.0 software. Descriptive statistics, cross tabulation, frequency and percentage distributions were used to determine the general characteristics of the data. Shapiro Wilk and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests were used to determine whether the data were normally distributed. For the data that were not normally distributed, Mann Whitney-U test was applied for pairwise comparisons and Kruskal Wallis-H test was applied for group comparisons of 3 or more. Pairwise comparisons were used to understand which groups were in favor of the differences in the Kruskal Wallis-H test. Spearman Pearson correlation analysis was used to test the relationships between variables. As a result of the analyzes, while there was a significant difference between the Fair Play orientations of the participants according to the variables of gender, sports branch, income status, there was no significant difference between the Fair Play orientations according to the variables of years of sports, level of sportsmanship, number of weekly training, level of success in the sports branch, education level and team/competition sports.
