Abstract (EN)

THE ADAPTABILITY OF JUST IN TIME PHILOSOPHY TO SERVICESYSTEMS : AN APPLICATION AT THE ADULT EMERGENCY ROOM OFTHE HOSPITAL OF GAZI UNIVERSITY MEDICINE FACULTY(M.Sc. Thesis)Deniz BALCIGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTAfter the World War II, Just in Time (JIT) is a philosophy that was firstapplied to Toyota Motor Company under the leadership of Taiichi Ohno. JITinvolves decreasing costs, increasing efficiency, increasing labor utilization, establishing quality and permanently repeating all these aims for the enterprisesin manufacturing systems or non-manufacturing systems. However, since thestart of JIT philosophy, there have been many studies regarding its applicationto manufacturing systems and the benefits gained. Today, service systems havestarted to improve fast by the effect of computer technology and informationage. In spite of the improvements experienced in service systems, few studieshave been made to analyze the effects of JIT philosophy to service systemswhich have a different structure from manufacturing systems. Because of thebenefits gained as the result of the successful applications of JIT philosophy tomanifacturing systems, this study analyzed the adaptability of JIT philosophy toservice systems and the ability of achieving the benefits, which are gained inmanifacturing systems by JIT philosophy, also in service systems. For thispurpose, the study of observation and time measurement has been performed atthe Adult Emergency Room of the Hospital of Gazi University MedicineFaculty. Within the framework of data obtained by this study, current systemhas been modelled by ARENA simulation software. By analysing the simulationresults, an alternative system is modelled in accordance with the principles ofJIT philosophy that can be applied to the system. The adaptability of JITphilosophy to service systems has been evaluated by comparing the simulationresults of the current and the alternative system.Science Code : 906.1.141Key Words : JIT, service systems, simulationPage Number : 89Adviser : Assoc.
