Istanbul Fatih Fevzipasa Street in the historical process

Abstract (EN)

Fatih Fevzipaşa Street, located between Fatih Complex and Edirnekapı, is one of the historical main arteries that reached today from the first construction of city. While Constantinople was being constructed as a Christian capital by Constantinus I, Church of Holy Apostles, which was dedicated to 12 Apostles and included the mauseloum of Constantinus, became the sacred center of the city. The northwestern axis of Mese that passed through Holy Apostles and reached Harisius Gate (Edirnekapi), was also important in Ottoman period. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror choosed the Istanbul as new capital of Ottoman Empire when he reorganized the city with an Ottoman – Islamic identity. Fatih Complex was built in the place of Church of Holy Apostles. In addition to, as the new sacred center of the city, Eyüp was established, including the tomb of Eyyub el-Ensari and sword-girding ceremonies were held in here. The procession way, which used Divanyolu between Topkapi Palace and Eyüp, passed through the Fatih Complex. In the historical process, Fevzipaşa Street, which is located on the northwestern of Mese / Fatih – Edirnekapı axis of Divanyolu, is one of the first streets opened in Istanbul during republication period as a result of the need for wider roads. The street was enlarged during the Menderes' constructional practices and became one of the main arteries of the city. In the thesis, the historical development of Fevzipaşa Street has been evaulated on the axes with the informations and documents about the opening and enlarging of street. The historical process involves examination of important monumental buildings and ceremonies on the axis of Mese / Divanyolu / Fevzipaşa Street. In this section, maps are prepared, so that it is possible to observe the progress of development through the maps. In the section of street's explanation, expropriation maps and Istanbul Sehremaneti (Municipality) publications were applied. Newspapers that made news about opening and enlarging of street were used. The relationship between Fevzipaşa Street and other main arteries providing access to the historical peninsula has been examined. It is observed that the opening of Fevzipaşa Street is effective between Fatih, one of the oldest settlements of the city, a symbol of traditional lifestyle and new modern lifestyle centers of Istanbul.
