Abstract (EN)
Sufism constitutes a mode of thought and a way of life that deepens an individual's inner transformation and connection with the Divine through the use of symbolic language. Among these symbols, flowers and fragrances stand out as significant metaphors that embody both exoteric (ẓāhir) and esoteric (bāṭin) layers of meaning. Flowers such as the rose, hyacinth, and violet occupy a distinguished place in Sufi texts and folk wisdom, representing spiritual states including love, patience, tranquility, and prophetic affection. Similarly, fragrances such as musk, amber, and aloeswood (oud) have been regarded as vehicles of spiritual intuition, inner serenity, and prophetic traces. This study investigates the ways in which flowers and fragrances are transformed into a symbolic discourse within Sufi writings and the ritual practices of Sufi orders. It examines Qur'anic and prophetic allusions alongside the perspectives of renowned mystics such as Rūmī and Yunus Emre. Moreover, archival materials from the Ottoman period and ritual practices embedded in the culture of Sufi lodges such as the burning of incense and the sprinkling of rosewater are analyzed to elucidate the ritual significance attributed to pleasant scents. In this context, the study concludes that flowers and fragrances function not merely as aesthetic elements but as symbolic instruments that contribute to spiritual discipline and the cultivation of the heart.
