Abstract (EN)

In this study, characterization study was performed to evaluate the performance of Medical Waste Sterilization Plant (MWSP) in Van. From November 2017 to October 2018, samples taken from the effluent from the medical waste sterilization facility for a period of one year were evaluated according to the Water Pollution Control Regulation (WPCR). In the scope of the study, pH, temperature, conductivity, COD, SS, NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, PO4-P and heavy metal analyzes (Hg, Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were carried out in wastewater and solid waste samples taken from the medical waste sterilization facility in Van. pH 7.26-8.07, temperature 22-25oC, conductivity 109-182 µS/cm, COD 200-900 mg/L, suspended solids 12-86 mg/L, NO2-N 0.4-1.0 mg/L, NO3-N 1.5-8.3 mg/L, NH4-N 11-25 mg/L and PO4P were in the range of 4.5-7.3 mg/L. Heavy metal concentrations were found to be lower than the limit values given in the WPCR. Microbiological analyzes were performed according to membrane filtration method. No activity was observed in the samples that were kept for 24-48 hours. In addition, leaching characteristics of solid wastes of MWSP in terms of heavy metal were investigated. MSWP wastewater contains organic pollutants, the COD value has exceeded the limit in some months and requires on-site treatment. Therefore, pre-treatment (coagulation, flocculation, etc.) should be applied to TAST wastewater in order to meet discharge standards specified in WPCR. in order to meet the discharge standards specified in the water pollution control regulation, MSWT wastewater should be pre-treated.
